FC Abuja v Lobi Stars: The battle to stay afloat
Written by Hassan
Friday, 08 May 2009
Abdullahi Maikaba, FC Abuja head coachThe battle to escape relegation in the Globacom Premier league may well be decided by Sunday’s encounter between the two outward-bound teams as they square up against each other in what will be most certainly be a no-holds-barred 90 minutes.

The top of the table seems pretty set with Bayelsa United coasting to the finish line barring unlikely surprises, but the battle for who leaves the league is far from over. The last-gasp efforts from the relegation bound teams may very well provide the excitement that may be lacking at the top toward the end.

Nasarawa United in 20th position and 34 points from 34 matches are almost certainly out of it. It is now a ‘do-or-die’ battle to borrow a phrase.

FC Abuja currently sit at 19 with 36 points from 34 games while Lobi Stars FC are 18th with 38 points. Both teams have an outstanding game each plus the remaining three games of the season. Whichever way it plays out, there will certainly be interesting drama in this part of the table as the league winds up.

While it may look to some as though FC Abuja are almost certainly ‘dead stick’ that may not be the case. Winning their next match changes the math dramatically. What’s worse, their next will see them playing home to their fellow relegation strugglers, Lobi Stars. Should Lobi lose, their chances will narrow considerably.

They have only two of their remaining three matches to play at home. However none of their next matches look like easy walks for them: Kano Pillars, Ocean Boys and Sharks. They will play Sharks and Pillars at home and FC Abuja and Ocean Boys away.

The same though is true for FC Abuja who have Rangers, Enyimba and Ocean Boys lined up, playing Lobi and Enyimba at home and Ocean boys and Rangers away.

The winner of Sunday’s encounter between these two drowning teams may well be the one who succeeds in clutching the strongest hope of escaping relegation it seems.

And Nasarawa United?  Having an average of one point per match so far, the possibility of seeing them pulling rabbits out of their hats at this stage is almost non-existent.
